7 tips for organising your children's wardrobe
Do you think that as the seasons change and things get bigger, your child's clothes and toys get bigger? And when you're expecting a newborn, you're slowly filling up your wardrobe? You are not alone! In this post, we'll share 10 tips for organising your kids' wardrobe. It's the biggest "little" project of your life: finding a way to fit all those cute and tiny clothes, shoes and accessories for your baby, not to mention nappies and other things, into a specific wardrobe. Even if all the other corners of your home are in complete chaos, it will be much easier for parents if the baby's wardrobe is complete, equipped and ready.
From waking up at midnight to change and feed the little ones, to waking up in the morning to get the kindergarteners ready, finding the right clothes in the wardrobe can be a challenge. Once your wardrobe is organised and ready for each day's use, you'll thank yourself that you can easily find everything you need to get ready for the day.
Step 1: Clean everything out of the cupboard
To get started, you need a clean sheet. Pull everything out of the cupboard so you can take a look at what you keep in that space. Perhaps the wardrobe will be used not only for clothes, but also for care items? Or will you also store toys, books and school supplies?
Whichever new storage and organisation system you choose to use, you will need to remove the old system from the cupboard. Take the opportunity to vacuum every corner of the wardrobe and scrape off any dust.
Step 2: Make the most of your wardrobe space
Choose a wardrobe organisation system that makes the most of every centimetre of storage space. This can include hanging clothes, stacking drawers, storage drawers and other ways to suit your wardrobe layout.
You can move shelves, drawers and hanging rods to any height to make room for things and make sure everything has its place. This avoids large gaps between shelves, which can lead to unused space.
Step 3: Categorising children's clothing
Before you start loading items back into the wardrobe, categorise them. What needs to be folded? What needs to be hung? What should be kept in a drawer?
Consider grouping items by season. T-shirts could all be neatly stored together, while warmer sweaters could be put in another pile.
You can also group by clothing types and colours.
Step 4: Use drawers to store personal belongings
Deep drawers are a great way to keep things tidy. These can be things you don't want to display - nappies, care products, sheets and so on.
The drawers are also ideal for storing socks, underwear, sleepwear and everyday clothes. You can store accessories such as hats, scarves and gloves that can't be hung or folded neatly.
Step 5: Put bulky items/boxes on the shelves
Shelves are ideal for items that can't be hung on a hanger or hidden in a drawer. These are likely to be larger items such as blankets, sweaters and toys.
To maximise space, we recommend the use of storage boxes, so that items are neatly arranged and can fit more. Put the things you use most often on lower shelves, so that your child can reach them easily and you can pick them up easily.
Step 6: Store seasonal items in hard-to-reach places
At the end of each season, assess which items will not be worn for the next few months and which will not be needed
We recommend moving items you don't plan to wear in the last few months to the top shelf or to a storage room or attic. This way, your essentials will remain at eye level and you can find what you need quickly. And seasonal items won't take up space and can be easily replaced.
Step 7: Reorganise the wardrobe regularly as the child grows
Just as we reorganise our personal wardrobes every now and then, so should we do with our little ones' wardrobes. Children grow rapidly in their first year of life, so clothes change quickly.
Our recommendation is to get your sizing in order along with the seasonal change of clothes. Clothes in good condition can be passed on to other children, sold or donated to charity. This way your wardrobe will never be overcrowded.
